Stevie’s Japanese retreat.

When Stevie sold her house to build a new home on her daughter’s family farm, she wanted a garden that captured the peace and balance she’d fallen in love with on her trip to Japan. The result is a stunning Japanese-inspired retreat, thoughtfully designed to blend tranquillity, structure, and natural flow.

A sweeping contemporary slatted fence runs the full length of the garden, adding a natural curve to a garden dominated by straight lines. At its heart stands a striking 600 kg monolith water feature, anchoring the design with calm energy and a sense of timelessness. Around it, over 100 m² of carefully laid paving leads through rockeries and low-maintenance planting, offering texture and contrast throughout the seasons.

Golden gravel, threaded with a meandering river of granite chippings, brings movement and harmony to the space, echoing the flow of water through a landscape. Every element of Stevie’s retreat has been designed to invite reflection, balance, and connection to nature. It has become an elegant sanctuary where East meets West on the family farm.
